Food review: Lucha Libre Taco Shop on Washington Street. Sucks! Haha, just kidding. It was as great as all its hype. “The Supra” quesadilla was loaded with juicy, well-prepped chicken, and the cheese (mozzarella?) was generously applied. Plus they didn’t skimp on the avo slices! Let me underscore, these were real chunks of fresh avocado, not guacamole like you might find in a lazy tacos shop. No señor. Their varied complement of salsas awaited on the condiments table, where I loaded up three auxiliary cups – one with dark red, one bright green, and a pale tangy one the color of seafoam – to put on the side of my tray when the order came up and I responded to the call of my name over the intercom from out front in the cold, wet patio tables.

I topped it off with a bottle of orange Jarritos soda and it was all for under $10. Will come back, despite how the girl at the cash register that took my order kept coughing into her hand up until she handed me back my change. Well, I was a cold night with rain and a winter storm blowing in off San Diego Bay. At least she promptly applied a hand sanitizer after doing so and before she got my corn chips.

In all the years it had been open (since 2008 according to its website) and possessed its reputation along with Pokey’s downtown of being a highly “cool” hipster San Diego place to eat, I’d yet to consume one of Lucha’s meals, until now. Well, I might have picked at the taco tray at The Casbah. Wasn’t it them who’d do a free buffet Monday night or something? But other than that I just hadn’t made the trip there yet. Guess I’m not that cool…

I’ll say it again. This food was great. A their chicken quesadilla made a superb and hearty meal for $6.50.
