A live stray dog about to be incinerated in the Ukraine.

Wake up, sportsfans! You’re better than this!

It was brought to my attention, in my newsfeed the other night (The Animal Rescue Site- add on Facebook and a daily FREE click helps feed shelter animals) that some rather disturbing things are going on in the Ukraine.

In preparation for Euro2012, they are ‘cleaning up’, taking care of the stray dog/cat issue. They’ve been known to use some rather callous approaches to animal control, but the new method they’ve chosen is something so incomprehenisble, I was unable to sleep after reading about it.

Apparently, using poison and shooting these animals wasn’t quick or effective (or heartless) enough, so they’ve spent $20,000 on a mobile incinerator, with the official use being cleaning up the carcasses of dead dogs and cats who have been hit by cars, etc. They lead you to believe the animals are put down first, but the cheap, ineffective drugs they are using aren’t the same things they use at your local vet, and more than a few people believe these animals are still alive when they are bagged, gathered up and thrown into a 900 degree celsius furnace. All of this needless suffering, for a SOCCER GAME. The money allotted for humane animal control is suspiciously missing. It certainly wasn’t used for spaying/neutering.

I encourage all compassionate people to share this, to sign petitions, to boycott the game. This story needs to be told. This has been going on since 2007. I don’t want to believe I live in a world where this is acceptable, where people look away and ignore it. I don’t care where you stand on animal rights issues, this is beyond the pale in terms of cruelty. If you watch the game, I hope you remember this. If you enjoy the game, knowing what you know- what does that say about you?
