SAN DIEGO NIGHTCLUB NEWS

Went to Club Fashion Whore last night, which had as its current venue Shooterz in North Park. Local musician, club promoter and nightclub personality Maystar puts on a pretty great runway show at her monthly event, with this night’s event displaying the cothing designs of San Diego fashion designer Cornfed By Barrie. You can see her pre-curtain time coaching the girls as they line up on how to walk and pose in front of the crowd, and the nights are consistently stocked with plenty of models. Although the size of the crowd was considerably smaller than when I attended at the event’s previous location, the San Diego Sports Club on University Avenue, the energy level remains high. I counted at least five other photographers shooting the catwalk action, and I wasn’t even really counting.

According to May’s doorman and boyfriend Chris Rogers, she wanted to change Club Fashion Whore from it’s previous location of SDSC “because it had been there a while.” May told me last night that the bar had also collected noise complaints due to hostile neighbors and had to cease all live entertainment for awhile. Afterwards, “they begged us to come back,” she said.

It seems she’s looking for clubs with more appropriate environments for her upscale, haute mode crowd… Referring to the backroom of Shooterz with its Roman bathouse decor Maystar laughed, “This place is about as divey as we get.”

Fashion Whore is a San Diego must-see monthly event. Also of note, somehow Maystar acquired an 18-and-up event with full bar, Club Noir, at another place in town. According to Maystar, Club Noir is currently the only San Diego 18-and-up club night with liqueur.

You can catch a Club Fashion Whore show next month at The Brass Rail in Hillcrest. “They just remodeled,” beamed May. ~RR
