Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, HOB San Diego – 12/12/2006
“This one’s a cover…”
Recollected by Kerin Van Hoosear

I knew this was going to be good. The guys in Me First are (in)famous for their antics and undoubtedly entertaining presence. The Fat Wreck Chords all-stars (Plus Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett) came on stage complete in black cowboy get-ups, no doubt promoting their new album of covers, “Love Their Country.” Through song after song Spike never took off his sweet shades, and all the guys (minus Dave the drummer) rocked those cowboy hats! The night was filled with many gems of spoken word; from making fun of the under 21 crowd stuck upstairs to letting us know that all abortions go to heaven. I was with my 20-year old brother upstairs with the rest of the kids watching rhythmless white boys kick the crap out of each other to songs like R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly” and oldies songs from “Blow In The Wind.” I usually enjoy being down on the floor but I’ve got to say, standing above it all watching a big Samoan dude plow everyone down = priceless. And despite being slightly harassed by drunk old men who looked like the Marlboro Man and a Monkees fanatic, it was a great show. And you never quite think that one day you’ll see kids running a pit to the Dixie Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl.” But I did. And it was awesome. KH
