Desert Rust
Cactus Music
If the whole CD were like the easy, melodic, gathered-around-the-campfire-drinking-beers first track, Cactus Music would be quite an enjoyable little jaunt. Unfortunately, when Desert Rust picks up the pace and adds thin, strained-sounding vocals, the warm desert night turns ice cold and you want to high-tail it outta there to the closest Indian casino. Folk-tinged, acoustic guitars reminiscent of early Eagles blend with harmonica for some nice moments, nonetheless. -KLM

Coretta Scott
Scream & Shout
Coretta Scott could easily be – if they haven’t been already – the next band you hear on one of those WB shows followed by an announcement: “Tonight’s episode featured music by…” They’re right on the mark for the pop-fed, yet angst-tinged zeitgeist of Gen Y, with lines like “depression’s a fashion going out of style.” If not the most original thing you’ve heard lately, it’s at least catchy. -KLM
