Vegas in the Time of Covid

Las Vegas drying up

The Independent Mayor of Las Vegas Carolyn Goodman has had enough of this shutdown

The City That Fun Built is Hard Hit by Coronavirus

Today we see the current mayor of Las Vegas is impatient. People are concerned, very concerned. They’re losing money there. This pandemic shutdown is affecting profits in a big way, and it’ll get worse. As a nation we’ll have to come to grips with the math soon. This thing is worth how much, exactly? Do we give our all, our total financial futures, for the lives of the vulnerable? Or do we accept the inevitable and push ahead, hoping for the virus to run its course and only take those who were the weakest, had the most comorbidity? This is the grim choice every governor must eventually face.

Current Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman clearly thinks her city should reopen. There’s money to be made and her town needs to get back to making it.

Her husband, also former Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman, I’m guessing would agree. He was a mafia lawyer before he ran for public office there, represented numerous crime figures (alleged) in the Las Vegas mob, among them ‘Meyer Lansky, Nicky Scarfo, Herbert “Fat Herbie” Blitzstein, Phil Leonetti, former Stardust Casino boss Frank ‘Lefty’ Rosenthal, and Jamiel “Jimmy” Chagra, a 1970s drug trafficker who was acquitted of ordering the murder of Federal Judge John H. Wood, Jr. … reputed Chicago mobster Anthony “Tony the Ant” Spilotro’ (from Wikipedia).

Few would know better the trade-offs, the pros and cons, of public safety vs. profits than such a gallery.

“Assume everyone is a carrier,” Mayor Carolyn Goodman

This MSNBC interview, ‘A debate is erupting over when to reopen Las Vegas. Independent Mayor of Las Vegas Carolyn Goodman joins Katy Tur to discuss’, is good and looks to be the first one in which a major public official makes the statement that there is the assumption everyone is assumed to be either asymptomatic or recovered, and that the public should spend less time worrying about the spread of Covid-19 because of that:

That part at the end about a modern day “survival of the fittest”…

Here’s a link as well to the CNN video interview on CNN from the Twitter account of Anderson Cooper where he controls her direction a but more forcefully.

What say you, dear reader? Should America take a page out of the mafia playbook and roll the dice on this one. There’s money to be made!
