Exile On Kettner Blvd? Nope.

Christmas, 2010

by Reviewer Rob

It was Christmas Eve tonight and apparently I hadn’t felt I’d had enough alienation and self-loathing recently because I went by one of the only places I knew that were open, The Casbah on Kettner Boulevard, hoping for a little diversion.

They had their annual Xmas eve event, a free show called Exile On Kettner Blvd., where local rock scene celebrities do covers of the Rolling Stones. It’s also a free show, if I didn’t already mention that.

When I rolled up Laurel Street from Pacific Coast Highway I could see there was a long line out front. Driving around the block to take a closer look I saw about fifty feet of mostly sullen dudes waiting to get in, with maybe ten-percent of the crowd being female. So I gave it a pass as I waited at the red light on the second drive-by. Looking back over my shoulder I checked if I recognized the doorman. It was some kid I’d never seen before. Don’t know why I bothered. Long gone are the days when Andrew would give me a tight smile and grudgingly nod me in past the line, and long, long gone are the days when Tim would be at the door and provide that sort of press-pass courtesy.

Merry Christmas, heathen brothers and sisters. I hope you had fun.
