Maybe both sentiments are true. Regardless, Tool rarely seems to heed the opinions of others, and this latest release is certainly a manifestation of their occult inclinations and apparent ardor with complex song structures and dizzying time signatures. However, through their sonic exploration they certainly have not forgotten how to kick the listener in the ass. Songs such as “Jambi,” “The Pot,” and the instrumental climax of “Right in Two” groove in an approachable way that more progressive hard rock should. The initially indigestible sections will eventually find a comfortable place to nestle within your psyche, but it may take a few spins to get there. This is music for patient people. But patience isn’t always solely its own reward; sometimes you get some badass music.
