The oversized doors measure 17 feet high and 9 \u00bd feet wide, and weigh approximately 13 tons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The doors were designed by Gilbert and John Donnelly, Sr. and sculpted by his son, John Donnelly, Jr. Each door is made up of four bas-reliefs which represent significant events in the evolution of justice according to Western tradition in chronological order. The thematic sequence begins on the lower left panel, moves up to the top of the door then continues on the bottom right panel and concludes on the upper right corner.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/about\/infosheets\/bronzedoors.aspx?rwndrnd=0.2755968610290438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supremecourt.gov<\/a>, 3-20-23. Below is from the linked pdf.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>1. SHIELD OF ACHILLES<br \/>\nThis panel depicts a scene found on the Shield of Achilles as described in Homer\u2019s Iliad. Two men bring<br \/>\na dispute before the elders (not depicted) who will each pass judgement. The elder with the fairest verdict<br \/>\nwill be awarded the two coins on the pedestal and his verdict is adopted by the whole body.<br \/>\n2. PRAETOR\u2019S EDICT<br \/>\nA Roman praetor (magistrate) publishes his edict proclaiming the validity of judge-made or \u201ccommon\u201d<br \/>\nlaw. On the right is a soldier, who may represent the power of government to enforce the common law.<br \/>\n3. JULIAN AND SCHOLAR<br \/>\nJulian, one of the most prominent law teachers in Ancient Rome, instructs a pupil. According to the<br \/>\nDonnellys, this represents \u201cthe development of law by scholar and advocate.\u201d<br \/>\n4. JUSTINIAN CODE<br \/>\nThis panel depicts the publishing of the Corpus Juris by order of the Roman (Byzantine) Emperor<br \/>\nJustinian in the sixth century AD. This is considered to be the first codification of Roman law.<br \/>\n5. MAGNA CARTA<br \/>\nKing John of England is coerced by the Barons to place his seal upon the Magna Carta in 1215.<br \/>\n6. WESTMINSTER STATUTE<br \/>\nKing Edward I watches as his chancellor (secretary) publishes the Statute of Westminster in 1275. The<br \/>\nDonnellys\u2019 description states \u201cThe greatest single legal reform in our history.\u201d<br \/>\n7. COKE AND JAMES I<br \/>\nEngland\u2019s Lord Chief Justice Coke bars King James I from the \u201cKing\u2019s Court,\u201d making the court, by law,<br \/>\nindependent of the executive branch of government.<br \/>\n8. MARSHALL AND STORY<br \/>\nThe Donnellys describe this event as Chief Justice John Marshall and Associate Justice Joseph Story<br \/>\ndiscussing the 1803 Marbury v. Madison opinion in front of the U.S. Capitol.
