After doing a treejob today I dropped off my ground guy in Mission Beach and then got stuck in traffic on clogged up West Mission Bay Drive with my rig and hauling trailer. It was only then I saw my tank was on “E” so I was in danger of running out of gas in the stop and go parkinglot of a road and blocking everyone as I hoofed it over the bridge with an empty gallon container. So I pulled off on the Sea World Drive exit and made it to the next available gas station, a Shell at the corner of Tecolote and Morena Blvd. After getting the precious petrol it was then I noticed what was once the Morena Club across the street was now called Cordova Bar. The Morena Club used to be a great drop spot for Reviewer Magazine. An old school style windowless dive bar in the pre-1980’s vein, it had live entertainment too. After printing an issue I brought a stack of Reviewers to place at the end of the bar one night and Joey Harris from The Beat Farmers was in the midst of doing a set. If memory serves it was just he and a female accompanying singer doing an amplified acoustic set on a short platform\/stage and they were both just belting their hearts out singing exceptionally well to the small crowd in that dingy room. But it was as if they were performing to a huge concert hall full of hipsters, that’s how much “professionalism” they emanated. Great stuff.
