Before he hit the stage at around 2:30AM, his live drummer and DJ hyped the crowd. The DJ was quite memorable—clad in militia garb, ski mask and all, as he cut and scratched. The I-C-E jumped on stage as my favorite sample ended: And meanwhile, on the south side of, south side of town, town, town, town, town. He opened with Dirty South!

It was very difficult to take photos at the show because Vanilla kept throwing bottles of water at the crowd as well as stomping on them. Everyone was drenched, especially those of us who were up front. It was awesome! All the chicks were screaming and grabbing him. The dudes were shouting lyrics and writhing against the wet women. Everyone was getting wild. Ice himself even announced he could smell the weed smoke. Soon after, Roll ‘Em Up blasted, as the audience got fogged-out and soaked.

The Illest Caucasian was a foot or two away from me for most of the first half of the show. Everyone was holding his hands and getting on the mike. He yanked girl after girl on stage until it was full of horny drunk chicks. The audience was humping, the beats were bumping, and the MC was jumpin’. After about 35 minutes the show was sadly over.

When I met Rob he was kind enough to sign some CD covers and my white tank top. I remember he was excited to see I had both Hot Sex and Hard To Swallow. He looked really cool, like, I was reminded of his attitude in his 1991 film Cool As Ice. Maybe it was because he was chillin’ with his VIP posse. I thought of how good of a hip-hop dancer he is and wondered why he didn’t do his electric body slither and fall on stage like he does in his music videos. I understand he is against his past and feels he was controlled by his producers and is over gimmicks—but what does that have to do with his mad dancing skills?

Platinum Underground is his latest full length CD. It was released August of 2005. Unfortunately it was not available at the show. It includes a few remakes, such as Ice Ice Baby and Ninja Rap 2. The last 10 tracks are phone messages, one of which is from Tammy Faye.

Rob Van Winkle will be appearing on the second season of The Surreal Life Fame Games. He seems most excited to be working with Ron Jeremy. Tracy Bingham and Emmanuel Lewis will also be contenders the same season. Who do you think will win the $100,000 grand prize?

My favorite Vanilla Ice quotes:

“We were invented.”

“I believe that we are all aliens and I’ve taken a lot of flack for that.”

“Drop that zero and get with the hero.”

My favorite Vanilla Ice lyrics:

“I never sweat it under pressure ‘cause I’m cool as ice.”

“I don’t sweat it on the mic ‘cause I’m cool as ice.”

“The industry.
