At least for now it does. Not for much longer though.

All that will change on June seventh when their lease runs out and the storefront closes its door. The small location is a short bar and a few taps with a chalkboard beer menu and some racks of wearable merch like hats and sweaters and t-shirts. But the beer…

Escondido-based Stone makes some of the best brew on planet Earth. Sorry to see this place couldn’t survive here. A Stone employee who said his name was Tyler told me they’ll open a half-keg of a “chocolate stout” called “Xocobeca” for the farewell tour party on June fifth.

“It’s got a cult following,” said Tyler, adding that “there’ll be a line down the block” for it, and “it’ll be gone in an hour and a half.”

I didn’t ask why they’re closing. Probably should have. Small places come and go all the time here. High-paying jobs don’t really exist en-mass in this town like in other large metropolises. But if you’re a devout beer follower like me seeing a small but quality outlet disappear must sting. Overhead is most likely high, and according to what they told me they close down early at night — 9:30 on a Saturday. So there’s most likely disadvantageous licence restrictions too. Paying San Diego rent is tough. Who knows about the why’s? One local drinker, in from walking his dog in the neighborhood and filling up growlers, told me they were tight-lipped when he asked why they were closing, and this guy seemed to know everyone behind the bar pretty well.

I have no idea what goes on in their twisted heads, or what Stone Brewery’s management does in their free time for that matter, holding black masses maybe, or throwing paper plates full of poo at each other or running over employees with forklifts? Who the fuck knows?

Stop in and find out for yourself on June 5th and buy a collectible t-shirt maybe.

Stone Ruination Double IPA 2.0, 8.5%, 4 oz. taster, $2 at Stone South Park…

4 oz. of Bourbon Barrel Aged Arrogant Bastard 8%, $2 at Stone South Park…

Stone South Park Is Closing by Bob Yunger STONE BREWERY has an outlet/storefront in South Park.
