{"id":10,"date":"2009-04-15T23:06:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-16T06:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reviewermag.com\/press\/?p=10"},"modified":"2009-04-15T23:06:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-16T06:06:00","slug":"uk-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reviewermag.com\/press\/2009\/04\/15\/uk-scene\/","title":{"rendered":"uk scene"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>interview: Enter Shikari<\/h1>\n<p>interviewed by Natasha Jones<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;\">Synth and Metal, a genre that has exploded since Enter Shikari hit the scene, with enough metal for the moshers to get dirty, but enough synth to relax the more fragile; I caught up with Enter Shikari on their recent UK tour where they were debuting some of their second album material, being backstage at the Guildhall &#8211; the boys seemed very relaxed even though there were 2,000 + screaming fans just the other side of the wall.<\/span> <br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\"><br \/>Date: 30th October 2008<br \/>Time: 8.30 PM (roughly)<br \/>Location: Backstage (Southampton, Guildhall)<\/span> <br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>What came first the Chicken or the egg?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> Oh no! I think the Bacteria came first, the bacteria in the air<br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rou:<\/span> the Chegg!<br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> I think the Chicken came from a Newt originally.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>How did the band first get together?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> Funny Story actually but it started with a chicken! Nah, it was Primary School really. Chris and Rou went to Primary School together then we all met at Secondary School.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>Have you changed your sound since first forming?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rou:<\/span> We\u2019ve gone through all sorts of sounds, when we started we were like crisp rock really beasty, then we got into the local punk scene which was straight up hardcore, then added in the electronics and mixed it all in to what it is now.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>How was the local scene?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> Yeah it was great one of our major influences really. Most of the bands that we listened to then have sort of faded out and drizzled out. There was a really strong hardcore punk scene, ska, rap. There was always gigs on at this local music club, it\u2019s not closed down but they don\u2019t put gigs on there anymore<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>What\u2019s the stage banner for this tour symbolize? <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> I\u2019m glad someone asked! They\u2019re all like ancient symbols basically from mythology. There\u2019s like 5 strips, the main one which takes up the most space is a message in old Hebrew which means on the 9th the dragon will be born which is the code apparently about 2012. It\u2019s also the guy that decoded it, he\u2019s featured in \u201cWe Can Breathe in Space\u201d speaking.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>Is that Relevant to the album?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rou:<\/span> We haven\u2019t really decided what the artwork on the album will be.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>Have you recorded the album yet?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> Nah, we\u2019re recording it straight after this tour.<span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><\/p>\n<p>Where you recording it?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rou:<\/span> Isle of Wight, we\u2019ll probably get quite bored, I don\u2019t know what there is to do there.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>There\u2019s one theme park, maybe you should visit that? Black Gang Chine <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> Ah, I\u2019ve been there quite a few times actually, on family holidays. Don\u2019t you have to walk through some giant legs to get in, haha. The place we\u2019re recording is actually a big manner with beautiful gardens. Half is a B+B and half is a studio and rented out for the public to view.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>Supports for this tour, hand-picked?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Both:<\/span> Yeah.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>What are your links to those bands?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rou:<\/span> That\u2019s a really good question.<br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> Yeah, well the only person that\u2019s on every date is DJ PDEX, who is my brother which is a drum n\u2019 bass DJ, cos\u2019 the next album we\u2019re moving more towards drum n\u2019 bass. Maximum the Hormone, from Japan, we played with them over there, thought we\u2019d repay the favour by getting them over here and until now they\u2019d never even left the country, they can speak hardly any English so we have our own sign language with them. Fell Silent, who are some of our closest friends, same as Flood of Red. We just thought let\u2019s bring all our friends on this tour and it\u2019s been loads of fun!<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>How\u2019s America going? Cracked it yet?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rou:<\/span> Nah, we\u2019re chiselling away, forming little cracks. We\u2019ve been over their quite a lot this year for periods, next year after the album comes out there we\u2019ll spend like two months solid touring.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>Will you be playing Bamboozle?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rou:<\/span> Yeah, there is talk of Bamboozle, and we might do a bit of the Warped Tour, fuck doing all of that! <br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>How has your sound Progressed, from the demos\u2019 to the album, from the album to your new Material? <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> From the demos\u2019 to the album there wasn\u2019t a great development, we were just touring constantly, then went to the studio to record, then right back to another tour.<br \/><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>What gigs and tours have been the best for you to play?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rory:<\/span> This one\u2019s been really good.<br \/><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Rou:<\/span> Yeah, there was one in America in Texas.
